Tasteful Attic Transformation

Where the roof becomes a retreat

Attic floors in Eindhoven tell a familiar story. Old roof spaces, low ceilings, a washing machine in the corner. Not quite rooms. Not quite anything. Just space that never got the attention it deserved.

This one was different, not because of what it was, but because of what the family needed it to become.

A couple, always busy between work and children, needed a place of their own. Not another family room. A retreat.

The bed anchors the centre of the space, directly under the ridge beam, between the two windows, the original and the new one.

Its headboard is a wall. And behind that wall, hidden from view, a generous shower wraps around the old chimney flue, with a bench and shelves that grow naturally from the masonry, in pure Mediterranean style.

Everything is connected.
Nothing is wasted.

A space built around intimacy, rest, and quiet togetherness.

Three walls came down.
Two small, cramped rooms became one open space under a double-pitched roof.
The old structure was thermally insulated, the timber beams of the roof exposed.
And a skylight was opened on the south side - to let the sun in during the day, and the stars in at night, from bed.

The palette speaks of the south.

Béton ciré covers the new floor and the shower walls, the sink area and the wardrobe: warm, continuous, like polished stone.
Natural wood. Olive green tones, beloved by the couple.
And a touch of terracotta:
in the shower recess, in the oval basin that sits opposite, a piece of pure Mediterranean craftsmanship, hand-shaped, entirely in terracotta.
Brass details, quiet and precise.

At the foot of the bed, under the new skylight, two low chairs face the winter light. A reading corner. A place for a slow conversation on a Sunday morning.

For a couple that never stops, this is the gift they gave themselves. A room that asks nothing of you, except to rest.
